Arthur Robert 'Ottie' Barr, second child of Walter and ElizaJane, was born October 24, 1894. He married Lala Dale, daughter ofWilford and Sarah (Myers) Dale. They were married on January 1, 1916 by Brother J. H. Voliva. They lived in the Middle Creek community until 1932 when they moved to Barn Hill, Illinois and later to Fairfield, Illinois. Ottie farmed and worked at the Airtex Plant in Fairfield. In later years they bought a camper and both enjoyed camping. They attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Lala died on May 5, 1976, and Ottie died on March 8, 1977. They are buried in the Middle Creek Cemetery. (Doris Jane Trotter) | Arthur Robert "Ottie" BARR

Vergene BARR Goin, 90, of Evansville, Ind. passed away Nov. 30, 2006 at Deconess Gateway Hospital. She worked for a while at Elder Mfg. Shirt Factory in McLeansboro before becoming a full time homemaker. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Browning Funeral Home in Evansville with Rev. Tom Hubachek officiating. Friends may call from 2-8p.m. on Thursday at the Browning Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro on Friday at 1 pm with Rev Delbert Bryant officiating. burial will follow at Blooming Grove Cemetery near McLeansboro. There will be a brief visitation period from 11 a. m. to 1 p.m. at Harre Funeral Home prior to the funeral.
Vergene was born in Delafield on Nov 11, 1916 to Arthur "Ottie" and Lala E. DALE Barr. Ottie barr moved his family to Wayne County near Fairfield, during the winter of 1932-1933 and Vergene lived there with the family until her marriage to James O. Goin Oct 19, 1935. James and Vergene made their home in McLeansboro. the family moved to Evansville in 1956. After her sons were out of high school, she worked for a while at Kresge Storein Evansville.
Survivors include one son, J. Randall (Sandra) Going of Chandler Ind.; daughter-in-law Carol Goin-Montgomery (Bill) of Newburg, Ind. sisters,Marcella (Harlan) Simpson, Fairfield and Annabelle Carter of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; brother Eldon (Lou) Barr, Columbia, Tenn,; four grandchildren and three great-granchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Larry Wayne Goin, a sister, Vermadell Haegele, and a brother Dale Barr as well as twobrothers who died in infancy (Robert Melvin Barr and Randall Dean Barr) Memorials may be made to West Terrace General Baptist Church, 715 Schutte Rd. Frank Boman Barr was born on February 16, 1911. He was a sickly baby and was never able to gain any strength. The doctor diagnosed him as having spinal meningitis. He died on May 25, 1911. Golda Mae Barr, born March 12. 1902, and John Earl Jenkins,son of Eugene Dennis and Mary (Bishop) Jenkins, were married on March 18,1922 at the home of the bride's parents. After the ceremony. Earl askedthe minister how much he owed him. He replied, "There's no set amount, just whatever you think it's worth." Earl only had one bill in his pocket, so he gave it to the minister, expecting some change in return. The man replied, "This is nice. I have never received this much before! "Needless to say, he enjoyed telling this story, he never expected to start married life without a cent! Earl farmed, and Golda taught school.She was a very talented person with a happy disposition. They lived in McLeansboro for a number of years and later moved to a farm located near Union Church. They attended the Middle Creek Church where Golda taught Sunday School. Iva Inez Barr, born August 21, 1904, and Edgar Tennison. son of Mary and Jim Tennison, were married on March 30, 1923 at the courthouse in McLeansboro. Illinois. Madge Alien and Golda (Barr) Jenkins served as witnesses. They lived in the Middle Creek community for a number of years and then moved to Mt. Vernon, Illinois where Ed was employed at the Car Shops. While living in Mt. Vernon, they attended the Old Union Baptist Church where he served as deacon and song leader. Later they moved to Malta, Illinois where he

James Wesley 'Wes' Barr was born May 28, 1898. He married Blanche Hobbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hobbs on April 5, 1919.Wes was employed at a defense plant during World War II and was later employed as a salesman for a roofing company. He was also a contractor.Wes had a good personality and loved to spin tall tales. Blanche died on April 24, 1956. Wes married Ruby Shelton Young on October 5, 1956, and she died on April 23, 1962. He later married Lillian Myers. Wes died on July 12, 1975. Services were conducted at the Johnson Funeral Home in Herrin with the Rev. Virgil Elmore officiating. Mary Bmily 'Emma' Barr was born March 13, 1896. She married Harry E. Cross, son of Pleasant Walter and Nancy Jones (Cloar) Cross. They were married April 22, 1916 at the home of the bride's parents. They were united in marriage by Brother J. H. Voliva. They started housekeeping "up in the hills'* approximately oneand one-half miles from Middle Creek Church. Later they moved to East St.Louis where Harry was employed. They had one son Donald Edward, who was stillborn on December 8, 1926. Harry died on December 28, 1950. and Emma later married Wallace Hayes. They moved to McLeansboro, Illinois and attended the Middle Creek Church. Oscar M. Barr, firstborn of Walter and Eliza Jane, was born onMarch 4, 1893. He was a slim boy with reddish brown hair who grew up helping his father on the farm. Since he was the eldest of the nine children, he shared the responsibility of caring for the others. He often attended church at Middle Creek and Delafield. When he became ill at age 16, it was thought he had a stomach ache but it soon became apparent that it was something more serious. After the doctor arrived from Mt. Vernon and diagnosed the illness as appendicitis, there was no other choice but to operate. Oscar did not survive the operation. Ninety-two year old Fannie Ward of McLeansboro related the following information to this writer. On the night of Oscar's death....
Earl Hughes and Jim Ward, both friends of Oscar's, and Nannie Maulding, Delia Yoder, and Fannie Yoder spent the night at Walter Barr's. Walter, Earl, and Jim cracked ice, and Nannie, Delia, and
Fannie put the ice in half-gallon fruit jars and placed the fruit-jars around Oscar's body to keep it cool in order to have the funeral the following day. Oscar died October 29, 1909. The funeral was held at Middle Creek Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Rosier Walter Barr, born April 29, 1906, and Mary Madeline Girard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Girard, were married on February12, 1927 by Bro. John Maulding at his home in McLeansboro. Mr. and Mrs.Cecil Alien served as their witnesses. They began their married life living near his parents. Rosier farmed, and in later years worked at the Car Shops in Mt. Vernon and at the Sawmill in McLeansboro. He liked animals and often had a flock of sheep. Rosier was always pleasant and loved to tease. They attended the Middle Creek Church where Rosier served as deacon and Mary was the church pianist. In later years they moved west of McLeansboro and then moved into McLeansboro. BIOGRAPHY: Velma Jane Barr, born July 29, 1917, and Joseph Eugene
Cross, son of Walter Carson and Estella (Walden) Cross, were married
on April 8. 1939 at the home of Bro. J. H. Voliva in Dahlgren. Virgil
and Ruby Barr served as witnesses. They lived in the Middle Creek
community for a number of years. Later they moved to East St. Louiswhere Joe was employed. In 1952 they moved back to Hamilton
County where Joe farmed and Jane was employed at the Elders Mfg.
Co. in McLeansboro. They had the misfortune of losing their home by
fire in February, 1958. They, along with their children, Doris Jane
and Leslie Eugene, moved into the Middle Creek School House. They
lived there for one year while they moved a house from Delafield and
made necessary repairs. Jane's favorite saying was, "If a job's worthdoing, it's worth doing right" The family attended the Middle CreekChurch. Jane died on December 14, 1960 at the age of forty-three years.Funeral services were conducted at Middle Creek by Bro. Rudolph Schlagand Bro. John B. BIOGRAPHY: Virgil Herman Barr, born June 26, 1912, and Ruby DeWitt,daughter of Lorton and Delia DeWifct, were married by Bro. J. H. Volivaat his home in Dahlgren on February 21, 1931. Rosier and Mary Barr servedas their witnesses. They first lived "up in the hills," southwest ofMiddle Creek Church. Later they lived in various places around theDahlgren area. They lived in Mt. Vernon, Illinois for quite a number ofyears. Virg pastored churches in the Mt. Erie, Nine Mile, Salem South,and Falrfield Associations. His last pastorate was at the Cross BaptistChurch near Pinckneyville, Illinois. Virg and Ruby enjoyed fishing andcamping. Virg died on November 6, 1984. Funeral services were conductedat the Cross Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the Mueller HillCemetery near Pinckneyville. Ruby lives alone and always has a largegarden. «b»FLORA AGATHA BOND GARRISON«/b» «b»Flora Agatha Bond, daughter of Leonard and Serena Bond, was born May 11, 1870, departed this life at her home in Aden Community, Hamilton County, Ill., December 31, 1951, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 21 days.«/b» «b»She was married to Douglas D. Garrison in 1892, to this union 11 children were born. She was proceeded in death by her husband and four children; two children passed away at an early age. Howard passed away in December of last year and Edward passed away in February four years ago. Those who survive her are Charlie of Divenon; Effie Malooley, Clyde, Rena Turner and Melba Turner, all of Peoria; Jennie Muehlenbein of Belle Prairie and Henry at home, who cared for his mother. She was also survived by four living step-children, Walter of Virden, Cora Corlee of Clinton, Okla.; Mary McThompson of Belle Rive and Iva Adams of Mt. Vernon. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 17 step-children and 12 great grandchildren.«/b» «b»Aunt Flora as she was commonly called has lived a greater part of her life in Aden Community. She was loved by all who knew her, both young and old. She confessed Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and united with the Ellis Mound Missionary Baptist church. She was a faithful attendant as long as her health permitted, always ready to witness for her Lord and Savior in testimony and prayer. Through her passing her church has lost a faithful member, her children a loving mother, the community a loving friend and neighbor and we feel our loss is Heaven's gain.«/b» | Flora Agatha Bond

(Pete) Boswell, 26, son of Mr. andMrs.Oran Boswell, five miles south of Wayne City, was killed inaction inNorth Africa on April 23rd according to word received by his parents.Young Boswell enlisted in the Army on October 14,1940, and was stationedat Fort Bragg, North Carolina until October 14, 1940 and was sent toAfrica, where he took part inthe invasion of the continent on November 7.Sgt. Boswell on January 10, 1942, while home on furlough was married toMiss. Maxine Draper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Draper, who survives.They had no children. Before entering the service hewas employed at RothDairy Co. in Mt. Vernon. In a recent letter to his parents he stated"Africa is not such a bad place, but itis not like the United States. Emily Brown, the granddaughter of William Gillet, was only seven years of age when her father, George Brown died. Her mother, Lucy Minerva Gillet Brown then married Robert A. Sprouse. Emily Brown became Emily Sprouse,assuming her step-father's name. Emily Brown Sprouse married WilliamHarshbarger in Lawrence County, Ohio.
Lucy Minerva Gillet, daughter of William Gillet, was married to George Brown in Lawrence County, Ohio on October 26, 1822. Emily Brown, assumed name of Sprouse, was born Jul. 16, 1824. "Manerva"Brown married Robert A. Sprouse July 1, 1833. Emily Brown, assumed name of Sprouse, was married on August 6, 1841 to William Harshbarger. They moved to wayne County, Illinois. Both are buried in the Zion Cemetery between Dahlgren and Keenes.
EMILY BROWN
Emily Brown, the daughter of Lucy Minerva Gillet and George Brown, was born July 16, 1824, in Lawrence County, Ohio. Shortly thereafter her parents moved to Indiana, where her younger brother, Fred George Brown,was born. Three months after her younger brother was born, her father died. Lucy was only 4 years old at the time of her father's death. Her mother went back to Ohio with the 3 little ones. She met and married Robert A. Sprouse, who was 17 years her elder. Emily Brown assumed the name of her step-father, whether legally or not is not known. On August5, 1841, in Lawrence County, Ohio, Emily (Sprouse) Brown married William Harshbarger, who had been born on August 8, 1820 in Botetourt Co., Va. Emily Brown and William Harshbarger left almost immediately for Illinois, settling first briefly in Hamilton County, then briefly Jefferson County,and then to Wayne County, Illinois, south of Long Prairie Baptist Church, where they became members. Emily surely was cheered when about 20 years later her mother, Lucy Minerva Gillet and step-father, Robert Sprouse also moved to Illinois. They settled first in Marion County, and at least one of the sons moved to Smithville, where he was a photographer.
Emily Brown and William Harshbarger had twelve children born to them. The oldest, Louisa Harshbarger, b. 1843, married R. A. Jenkins; Jacob Harshbarger, b. 1345 m. Margaret Richardson in Hamilton Co. II; Mary Harshbarger was b. Jan. 8, 1847 m. Daniel Smith; Hannah Anne Harshbarger b. Jan. 16, 1849 m. William Harrison Smith, brother of Daniel; Wilford James L. Harshbarger, b. 1851 m. Minerva Chapman; America Harshbarger b.1853; Emma L. Permelia Harshbarger b. Jul 15, 1864, d. Sept. 3, 1864: William W. F. Harshbarger b. 1857; Martha C. Harshbarger b. 1860; Dene Harshbarger. m. a Bailey, moved to Chanoia, Mo. ; Helen M. Harshbarger, m. a Mortimer: Ambrose Harshbarger b. 1863.m. Myrtle Gowler. All of Emily and William's children were born in Wayne Co., Illinois where they continued to live and enjoyed a reputation as good people who loved each other and their children. Emily Brown (Sprouce Harshbarger died Aug 3, 1889 in Wayne County. She is buried by the side of her husband in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Also buried beside them is their daughter, Emma , who lived for only about 45 days.
